This week’s Athlete Focus is on Spenser Mango – find him on Twitter @MangoBuck. Shayla caught up with the World Team member and Olympian Spenser to get his thoughts on what wrestling means to him and some advice he has for young wrestlers.
Why do you love wrestling?
I love wrestling because I get to battle on the mat. It’s just me, one on one with my opponent, and I have to depend on myself to get the job done.
What are 3 things every wrestler can focus on for improvement?
Every wrestler can focus on conditioning, technique, and strength. Those 3 things can greatly improve your results.
Who trained you or influenced you?
Throughout my years of wrestling I have been trained and influenced by many people and coaches. A few that really pop out are Brian Jackson, Ivan Ivanov, and Shon Lewis.
Outside of wrestling, what can people do to improve? What does your cross-training, nutrition, mindset look like?
Outside of wrestling people can improve by watching film, strength training, eating healthy, and getting enough rest/recovery.
- Cross Training: I lift about 3x a week, I run almost every morning, and I do different agility workouts 3x a week.
- Nutrition: I try to eat lean meats with vegetables and fruit. 4-5 smaller meals a day to keep my metabolism up.
- Mindset: We have mental focus training every week. I love to win and I go out to every match expecting to do so.
What are the biggest mistakes and myths you see in wrestlers trying to improve?
Everyone thinks they need to cut a massive amount of weight to be a good wrestler, but feeling good while you wrestle and improving your technique is more important.
What is your next big challenge?
My next big challenge will be a fall tour – We plan to go overseas for a training camp/tournament.
Many thanks to Spenser Mango for taking the time to share his perspective. If you’re a Spenser Fan, you can support him with a great looking World Team wrestling T-Shirt.
